Natural
Living: Home Section - Efficiency
|
| The
most effective way to save energy and resources is not to need
them in the first place: |
- Size
- Openings
- Insulation
- Design
|

This straw bale home in Mississauga demonstrates high levels
of efficiency with few small openings on the north side. This
home was designed by Martin
Liefhebber as a 6000 square foot co-housing residence that
creates a sustainable solution for the site, materials and lifestyle
of the owners. Copyright 2004 John Wilson |
|
Size
Reducing
the size of all elements of the home reduces the overall materials,
energy, construction cost and maintenance.
|
|
Openings
Filling
all cracks or gaps reduces heat or cooling losses. Reduce
or elliminate opening such as doors and windows on the sides
that are most impacted by wind.
|
|
Insulation
Use the
highest possible level of insulation for assuming a colder
climate. Straw bale provides a natural renewable building
material with insulation levels reaching R40-R60. Straw bales
are also a natural breathing wall type of insulation that
improves indoor air quality.
|
The
straw bale provides excellent insulation levels, is
a renewable resource and creates a "breathing"
wall for improved indoor air quality. Copyright 2004

|
Design
Place
elements such as storage, utility, and stairways, that aren't
used that often, in locations where they can provide an extra
barrier to cold wind.
|
The
straw bale wall on the north side of this home protects the
house from the cold north winds. The wall has few windows
or doors. The space is used primarily for storage, as a hallway,
and for stairs. Copyright 2004 John Wilson
