HOME - PLACE

Natural Living: Home Section - Place

The site provides many opportunities to take advantage of natures resources for free:
  1. Access to Sunlight
  2. Orientation
  3. Slope of Land
  4. Resources

This aeriel view of the award winning Wilson Natural home shows the perfect site conditions including trees to the north, open space sloping down to the south, and direct south orientation. Visible in the picture is the wind turbine tower just south west of the house. Copyright 2004 John Wilson

Access to Sunlight

Orienting the house towards the sun provides the most basic use of natural solar energy. During site selection look for land with trees on to protect the home from the wind and lots of good solar access.

Orientation

Align the shape of the house on the site in order to ensure that it is able to collect as much sunlight as possible (a requirement for colder climates, shading may be preferable in warmer climates).

Slope of Land

Improves the access to solar energy when it falls on the side of the home where sunlight predominates.

Resources

Look for easy access to natural resources for building including trees, sand, vegetation that can be used as straw, bolders, and wind.
