PlanetSolar is a pioneering effort to prove we can build sustainable energy technology on water. This solar catamaran employs leading-edge technology available on the market for anyone to integrate into their home, boat, car or building. The intention is to demonstrate that by innovative use of existing materials and technology, high-performance solar mobility and a comfortable lifestyle can be realised today.
Detail
A Project at the Service of our Planet
The goal of the PlanetSolar team? Be the first to circumnavigate the globe in a “solar” boat, i.e. one powered by a silent, pollution-free electrical engine, driven exclusively by solar energy.
With this project the PlanetSolar team intends firstly to show that current technologies aimed at improving energy efficiency are reliable and effective, and secondly to advance scientific research in the field of renewable energy. PlanetSolar has already made technological developments possible in many fields such as the production of composite materials and structures, and also the production and storage of solar energy (or electricity). Each stage in the project and each day that PlanetSolar sails will enable science to progress.
At the heart of this project is the conservation of our planet by the promotion of solar energy, energy efficiency and eco-mobility. This is a great occasion to advance knowledge and to inform and make the general public aware of the importance of renewable energy.
PlanetSolar aims in a nutshell:
Demonstrate the potential for renewable energies and photovoltaic
To show that today we have the technology required for sustainability
To take part in the technological development of renewable energy and advance scientific research
To inform and make the public aware of the importance of renewable energy
To make the best use of energy efficiency
To show that the economy and ecology can and must work together
The result is a solar powered yacht that can sustain 8 knots day and night continuously forever. Off-the-shelf solar PV panels combined with a lithium battery system and super efficient design make this large 100 foot by 50 foot yacht work. The solar panels provide up to 100 kilowatts of power. The lithium battery systems can store 1,300 kilowatt-hours of energy. imagine this type of energy system implemented on your house or office building. Just think of your car, covered by flexible solar panels integrated into the roof and hood. Combined with electric motors and lithium batteries our transportation systems and building are becoming the power plants of the future.
