You must read this book! I've just finished reading the most inspiring true story about a boy from Malawi, Africa, who defies all the odds, survives horrific famine and terrible poverty that denies almost all opportunities, and builds a wind turbine that provides a glimmer of the light that will provide a beacon of hope through the ages. This boy, the author of this remarkable book, is William Kamkwamba.
My introduction to this remarkable person was through a TED Talks video I found on the internet about a year ago.
More recently, William has appeared again on TED, showing his progress since 2007.
Once you've seen these introductions to William, read his book. I actually decided to try purchasing it as an eBook using Koba and it has been a great way to read. I've used the Koba reader on the web site, iPhone and the Adobe Digital Editions application for reading it on my PC. With the PC edition I can see all the photographs. Great read all without the need to use any paper and since our house is solar powered we are using renewable energy for the display of the information. Pretty nice feeling.
Once you read the book, it is time check out the documentary video William is working on called Moving Windmills.
Finally, go to the web site William now runs and let us all work to get his story and everything that it inspires out to as many people as possible. We all can learn so much from William Kamkwamba. He's got me thinking of the old motors in my basement, and how I can hook them up to some blades and start generating renewable energy from the electric wind. And if he can do it, I can do it, and so can we all. William shows us that no matter where we are, no matter how desperate things may seem, with some hope, some ingenuity, some perseverance, and some creativity we can change the world. We should be building schools for kids like William everywhere it the world. So run, don't walk and get hooked on The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
How can we transform our world so that it is possible to imagine a world where renewable energy, wind power, and solar energy make it possible for us all to live equally, with equal opportunity?
