Natural Home Tours Inspire Green Future

Natural Homes are a renaissance in green home construction where time-honoured tradition meets a modern pioneering spirit, and the latest in high technology. Straw bale home construction allows a family of four to build a beautiful, sustainable home using readily available local materials and skills, and a style of architecture rooted in place and community. With the best practices combined in this home - including straw bale walls, passive solar design, wind turbine electricity generation, solar panels, and a green roof - new levels of efficiency and sustainability are being achieved. To share their knowledge and inspire others, this pioneering family opens their doors for all to see, touch and feel the Green Future of home building, in an annual event called SunFest. Family members will conduct tours of the home each hour between 12 noon and 6pm on Saturday September 6, 2003. A highlight of the tour is the chance to see the Hydro meter run backwards!

The Natural Home was designed by award-winning architect Martin Liefhebber, designer of the CMHC Healthy Home in Toronto, to be beautiful, healthy and have a positive impact on the environment. The house offers central lighting by skylight, cooling ventilation similar to Sahara architecture, solar panels and wind turbine for electricity and a green living roof - the first such hybrid application in Canada that significantly improves energy efficiency and collection. The house is structured to maximize passive solar heat with concrete floors that include hydronic tubing as a back-up heat source. Even the framework of parallam posts and beams are non-toxic and manufactured from recycled or farmed materials rather than depleting precious non-renewable resources. In terms of conserving energy and generating green energy, this house has all the answers.
